It is important for all teachers to have a first aid kit in their classrooms because it is one of the necessities for safety. Every school does not have a nurse on duty, and teachers have to take the lead in emergency situations, therefore teachers need to be prepared for an emergency situation at any time.
From reading the handout that was provided I learned a number of things, here are some of them. I learned that you can purchase a first aid kit from the local chapter of the American Red Cross. I learned that we have to use the Universal Precautions when using any first aid kit. Also, checking first aid kits are important because many items in a first aid kit have expiration dates. You must have consent to give first aid. There are two types of consent. Actual consent is oral or written permission from a mentally competent adult to give first aid. A parent or guardian must give actual consent if the victim is a child or is not mentally competent.
Three topics that I have learned about in the reading that will help me become a better teacher are, Consent To Give First Aid, Heart Saver CPR in Schools, and First Aid Kits. The Consent To Give First Aid column taught me that it is very important to make sure that the student I am helping has been given consent from their parents, or legal guardians. If I use any kind of first aid on a student who has not, the school and I can be sued and the parents would win because they did not give consent for first aid to be used on their child. In the Heart Saver CPR in Schools column I learned that there are programs out there that can help teachers become educated in the skilling of performing CPR in emergency situations. It is a five hour program that can help me save the life of one of my students, and prepare me to be a better calm teacher in case of an emergency. The First Aid Kit column will prepare me to be a better teacher by showing guidelines on how to use your first aid kit, to make sure it is in your classroom at all times, and to check and make sure that the items are not expired. All of these topics will help me become a prepared, quality teacher and it will allow me to feel that my students and I are in safe environments in case of an emergency.
It is important to keep first aid kits where they might be needed. You will want to have a first aid kit in your classroom. I provided a first aid handout for you to read. Tell me why you would want to keep a first aid kit in your classroom? (explain and reflect)
Accidents can occur at any moment especially when dealing with young children. It is important to be prepared for them. Gloves, bandages, antiseptics hand cleanser, face mask etc. are all important when dealing with injured children. Being prepared saves time, energy, and lives. The article taught me that you can never be overly prepared for an accident. The consequences of a child getting injured around an unprepared teacher could be horrendous. Having a first aid kit, knowing safety rules, and being able to implement them are the first steps in having and maintaining a safe learning environment
Did you learn anything new from reading the first aid handout? (explain and reflect)
The article taught me that you cannot prepare for everything that goes wrong, but you can come pretty close. With the proper training you can help save a lives, and prevent serious injury. By the same token if you are not properly trained or perform first aid against someone’s will you can be sued for harmful injury. There are laws to protect good sanitarians, but they don’t protect you from everything. As long as you maintain good, safe health practices like wearing gloves and protecting both yourself and the victim that should not happen though. The most important thing is to check the victim before attempting any medical procedure. These are important tips to learn especially when you are a classroom teacher. Students fall and get hurt on the playground a lot. By learning the proper protocol I can now help better protect myself and students from harmful pathogens and other dangers.
Explain and reflect about three topics that you learned about in the handout that you feel will assist you in being a quality teacher.
Through this article I learned about choking, rescue breathing, and controlling bleeding. I learned that as long as a child can talk they are getting enough air through the air passages. If the child cannot talk that means they aren’t getting enough air. In either case you should try and encourage them to cough up whatever is stuck into their throat. I also learned that the very first thing you should do if a child cannot talk and is trying to cough up and object is call emergency services before attempting to dislodge the item from their throat. One of the most important things I learned was that the abdominal thrusts you use are different depending on the child’s age. The article taught me that there is a difference between rescue breathing and CPR. CPR is used to restore both heartbeat and breathing and rescue breathing on deals with breathing for another person. To protect yourself when rescue breathing a mask should be worn. In between each breathe remove your mouth so that the victim can exhale if they pass out and their heart stops beating then revert to CPR. Controlling bleeding is among the easiest technique I learned. When a person is bleeding immediately apply pressure with a sterile cloth. If they bleed through that cloth apply a new one over it without removing the first. Do not remove anything lodged in it and keep the injury elevated to stop the bleeding. I think all of these things are valuable things to know as a teacher. The most important things I learned relate to choking and stopping bleeding. I feel like those will be the most common injuries that occur in my classroom and I hope that with the tips I learned from this article I will be able to effectively manage each of these situations. It was very informative and I learned a lot of things like wearing gloves to protect you from others. When you have an injured child and are panicking you generally don’t think of these things. As a future teacher I will be sure to keep all the protective items listed in the article close at hand to protect myself and my students.
A first aid kit should be kept in the classroom in case there is a need for immediate attention to injuries that occur during class. Sometimes the nurse may not be readily available to a wounded or ill student; therefore I may need to assist the student myself. If I keep a first aid kit handy, I could assist the student rather than sending them to the nurse where they may have to wait their turn amongst their peers. Also, sometimes injuries the students have are very serious. Instead of me sending the student off to the nurse for a paper cut, I could help them myself, rather than taking up the nurse’s time because she may have to help a student with serious injuries or an illness.
Most of the information in the handout I was already familiar with. The handout did refresh my memory on CPR and the proper way to give CPR although I am not trained. The warning signs given to identify a stroke where meaningful, I did not know some of the warning signs that were listed. Some of the medical terms given to identify cuts were helpful; I learned some new terms from that. The section on teeth taught me that I should place a knocked out tooth in a cup of milk to preserve the tooth, I never heard of that before. The section on shock was meaningful also. I didn’t know any information on ways to treat or identify signs of being in shock, so I learned a lot from that. Overall the handout was very helpful to me, either I learned something new, or refreshed my knowledge on what I have already heard of.
One topic that I feel will better assist me in being a quality teacher was Stopping a Nosebleed. Many young children have problems with nosebleeds, and with me aspiring to be a Kindergarten teacher I will have to deal with that a lot. Although I haven’t had problems with nosebleeds myself I need to know how to stop them so I can assist my students if it were to happen to them. Knocked-Out Tooth will also be helpful. Young children lose their teeth many numerous reasons and if a student was to lose their tooth while in my classroom I need to know the best way to assist them. Accidents occurring in Kindergarten where a student may accidently or purposely knock a peers tooth out and I need to know what to do. There could also be situations where student(s) lose their tooth due to natural causes and the information in this section could be helpful then too. Preventing Infection is a good section too. If one of my students injure themselves I need to know the best way to help the situation so they could have the best recovery possible.
It is important to keep a first aid kit in the classroom at all times. There are many situations that may arise that will call for the use of a first aid kit. If a child in the classroom gets hurt or somehow cut themselves and need a bandage, then having a first aid kit will be useful. Also if there is a situation where the school nurse is not around to help out and you have the proper permission to use the first aid kit, then it should be used. First aid kits are very helpful and should be taken advantage of in any case. They provide the right materials that can help keep anyone safe.
From the first aid handout, I learned that people can sue you for giving them first aid. If a person does not want first aid then you have no right to give it to them or a child. The Good Samaritan laws protect people who give first aid help not out of misconduct. Also that at all times while performing first aid it’s important that you protect yourself. Someone you a performing first aid on could have a disease and if you are not careful you could contract it. I also learned that doing a victim assessment is vital. Doing this lets you assess the seriousness of the situation and what is the best plan of action to take.
In being a quality teacher I believe it is important to be able to stop tick bites on children. With this knowledge I will be able to find out how the child has gotten the bites and if the case needs to be reported to my superiors. It will also allow me to stop the spreading of ticks and inform the school that the child might need medical treatment. To deal with a bee sting it is important that I make sure the student was in fact stung by a bee. If the child is allergic, then I will know that the stinger should be removed immediately and the child should be taken to the nurse. If a child has their tooth knocked out, I would know that the tooth should be put into water or milk. The child should be taken to their dentist so the tooth can be fixed.
Keeping a first aid kit in your classroom is a good idea, and I plan to have one in my future classroom. Using a first aid kit in the classroom is a smart decision and also teaches your students how to properly help out with first aid. An example of when you could use a first aid kit in your classroom can range anywhere between a simple cut that needs a bandage, a nose bleed, or child that has stopped breathing. I also think it would be a great idea to have a first aid kit located on the playground at the school. From experience just this year, I witness a child fall and bust her nose and lip open while playing. The teacher who was on the playground ended up with blood on her hands. This could have been dangerous because we did not know if the child had any infections or diseases that could be spread to the teacher. If we had placed a first aid kit on the playground along with the other things such as Germ X, tissues, and bug spray, the teacher would have been protected.
Although not the most horrifying emergency, a knocked-out tooth is something that I have never thought about as a teacher. Hearing of loose teeth, you automatically think of a baby tooth. But from reading this first aid handout I now know what to do with a permanent tooth that has been knocked out. An example would be while playing on the playground a student is accidentally kicked in the mouth by a fellow student. You know the child has already lost all his baby teeth, so the two teeth that were kicked out were permanent. You immediately place sterile dressing on the space where the teeth were and have the student bite down to hold it in place. Place the tooth/teeth in a cup of cold milk or water if milk is not available. The parent should then be called and taken to the dentist immediately so that the tooth/teeth may have a better chance to be saved.
Three qualities that I learned from this handout are keep a first aid kit handy, be prepared, and stay calm. Keeping a first aid kit in your classroom, gym, and playground are of great importance. Accidents occur when you are least prepared. By keeping a first aid kit in these places, you reduce the risk of infection and germ spreading and keep the staff and students safe. Whether the accident is a simple cut or more severe like a nose bleed, first aid kits are helpful. The next quality that I learned is that you have to be prepared. Reading this handout already made me more knowledgeable in some areas of safety with first aid. We have to stay studied up on this information so we will know how to keep our students and fellow co-workers safe. Being prepared also assures us that we have first aid in kits in all the necessary places so incase of an emergency we know where to locate it. Stay calm is also a quality that I learned from this handout. In almost every column we read it stated in the first sentence to stay calm. Staying calm reassures the victim that things are going ok and someone is helping them, which in return helps them not be furthered injured. But if we study and know the procedures incase of emergencies then we as well will be able to stay clam and keep our whit about us.
As a teacher, it will be a good idea to keep a first aid kit in the classroom. Keeping a first aid kit in the classroom shows responsibility and safety. Sometimes in public schools, there won’t be a school nurse to help with children’s injuries. So storing a first aid kit can be very handy especially when you keep the first aid kit update with Band-Aids, Neosporin, and gloves. Wearing gloves is very important when handling with blood from a child’s injury. Also keeping important numbers in the first aid kit will be extremely helpful when you come to a predicament such as a child swallowed poison. I know as a teacher, I would want to have a first aid kit in my future classroom because I’m there to teach the child and also to protect the child. Having a first aid kit will help me with my responsibilities as a teacher when it comes to handling a child’s nosebleed or swallowing poison.
I did not know about having to consent to give first aid and that there are two types of consent. I learned that actual consent is where you have an oral or written permission from an adult. Good Samaritan laws help protect the people that give first aid when they learned the appropriate skills to work on someone that might be unconscious. If that injured person tries to take that person to court, Good Samaritan law helps protect that person who was trying to do. I think that is an extremely helpful law that we use to protect the people that have the knowledge to save someone’s life. I never knew what to do if someone is poison; I knew there was a number for you to call. I learned that you should check and monitor the person’s airway, breathing, and pulse. I think this first aid kit handout was really interesting to read and extremely helpful when reading like what to do when checking a victim. I know I would feel helpless if someone was choking or unconscious because I wouldn’t know what to do, but by reading this handout I now know how to check a victim that is lying unconscious!
The three topics that I read that would help be more confident in using first aid would be keeping a first aid kit in my classroom, being prepared with any sickness and also most importantly staying calm! I think having a first aid is worth putting money into because children can get hurt in any kind of way and you want to be prepared for the worst. Also being prepared makes you feel more confident that you will be able to handle the situation the best you can. The most important topic as a teacher would be staying calm because if you are start panicking, you won’t be able to the think right and the child will start panicking if you aren’t calm. Staying calm helps you think straight and what you need to do next and also keeping the child calm will help the process go smoothly!
First aid kits are essential to have in a classroom setting because you never know when there may be an accident in the classroom. A child may get hurt and a first aid kits needs to be on hand to quickly nurture wounds the child may have. By quickly addressing cuts, scrapes, bites, etc. with a first aid kit, other children in the classroom won’t panic and neither would the child that is hurt or injured. First aid kits are good to have in a classroom because a nurse may not always be available when you need them. All teachers should have a first aid kit to be prepared for accident inside or outside of the classroom. Also the first aid kit is convenient and easy to use. It consists only of the things you will need to deal with an injury in the classroom.
I would want to keep a first aid kit in my classroom because one of my students may bust his or her knee or scrape their elbows. The first aid kit will be easy to access and it would contain materials to clean the wound, prevent infection, and band aids to cover the wound and stop the bleeding if bleeding is present. Also I would want to keep a first aid kit in my classroom because the nurse may not be able to assist one of my students at the time and if the child has a minor injury I can easy tend to the injury and continue teaching my class. Another reason I would want to keep a first aid kit in my classroom is, a student may not be able to walk to the nurse’s office after they fall or injure a part of the body. I can tend to the wound and give the child an ice pack to put on his or her injury.
One thing I learned from the handout is you must have consent to give first aid. I thought anyone could give first aid. I learned that a person must have oral or written permission from a mentally competent adult to give first aid. You can’t give first aid to someone unless they give you permission to do so. I didn’t know that Good Samaritan laws are used to protect people who give first aid to others without consent. I didn’t believe it was that serious. Also I didn’t know that you can face lawsuits if you treat a person with first aid and the wound becomes worse than what it was in the beginning.
Another thing I learned from the handout is how to deal with strokes and the warning signs. A stroke is a condition caused by a blocked or broken vessel in the brain. A stroke can occur when a clot moves through the bloodstream and lodges in the brain. I didn’t know that a clot had to be in the brain to have a stroke. Signs of a stroke include, slow breathing rate, slurred speech, paralysis on one side of the body, etc. First aid for stroke involves few but very important steps such as, keep the victim lying down with his head and shoulders raised to relieve the force of blood on the brain. Also you must check the airway and keep the air passage open, if there is fluid or vomit, the victim should be on his or her side. You shouldn’t give them anything to drink and you should comfort the victim until help arrives. I was always told that you had to put a spoon in a victim’s mouth to prevent the victim from swallowing his or her tongue. This information was very important to me because I had an older brother who died from a stroke and if my parents would have known the first aid procedures, they probably could have saved him.
Three topics I learned that will help assist me as a teacher is, how to deal with choking, CPR, and controlling bleeding. Choking is an emergency in which the airway is blocked. I learned about the universal distress signal which is a warning signal that a person has difficulty breathing and is show by clutching at the throat with one or both hands. Abdominal thrusts are helpful to dislodge any object that is stuck in the victim’s throat. Abdominal thrusts are a series of thrust to the abdomen that force air from the lungs to dislodge the object. I learned that I must first call a local emergency number than ask the victim if they are choking. If the victim cannot speak or breathe, I can then administer abdominal thrust by making a fist with one hand, place the thumb side of the fist into the victim’s abdomen above the navel and below the rib cage. I give five quick abdominal thrust and apply inward and push up toward the victim’s diaphragm in one smooth movement. This information is important because kids are small and can easily choke on small objects. The objects aren’t always food and it is important to know how to help a child who is choking in order to save their life.
Another thing I learned about is CPR which is also called Cardiopulmonary resuscitation. It is a first aid technique that is used to restore heartbeat and breathing. Every teacher and faculty should receive CPR training. I want to become a teacher and this information is helpful because I will have to receive professional instruction in order to administer CPR in my classroom. I also learned of the five ABC’s of CPR that should be performed if a child is not breathing. The ABC’s are, Airway-open the victim’s airway, Breathing-perform rescue breathing if breathing has stopped, and Circulation-perform CPR if a pulse is absent.
One other thing I learned that will be helpful in the classroom is controlling bleeding. A lot of small kids get injured at school whether it is on the playground, in the classroom, or any other location in the school building. Many injuries may cause bleeding. Learning how to control bleeding was important and I thought it would be important for me to know. The first priority of any wound is to stop severe bleeding and prevent germs from entering the wound. A person with a wound can bleed to death in a matter of minutes. That is a scary thing to know. As a teacher, I have to follow the universal precautions which are steps taken to prevent the spread of disease by treating all human blood and certain body fluids as if they contain HIV, HBV, and other pathogens. When controlling bleeding, a teacher must wear gloves, call the local emergency number and obtain medical care. The wound should be cleaned and direct pressure to the wound must be applied. The wound should be elevated to help reduce blood flow and the wound needs to be bandaged. If bleeding still continues, direct pressure should be applied using the heel of the hand and the weight of your body to compress the artery against the bone. This information is very helpful because bleeding is serious and children can easily get hurt in an school environment.
It is important to keep first aid kits where they might be needed. You will want to have a first aid kit in your classroom. I provided a first aid handout for you to read. Tell me why you would want to keep a first aid kit in your classroom? (explain and reflect)
Did you learn anything new from reading the first aid handout? (explain and reflect)
Explain and reflect about three topics that you learned about in the handout that you feel will assist you in being a quality teacher.
I will need to keep a first aid kit in my classroom just in case of an emergency. Young children are in accidents all the time, in the school, outside in the playground, etc. It is good to keep gloves in your first aid kit, just in case a student is bleeding. You must protect your own health and the victim’s health. Another person blood “can contain harmful pathogens.” It is good to keep two kinds of gloves, latex and vinyl. Vinyl should be kept because some people are allergic to latex. Hand sanitizer is important to keep as well. After you take off your gloves, you should use hand sanitizer for extra protection. A face mask should be worn or shield just in case you need to perform mouth to mouth. You should not touch any open pathways after giving first aid. You should wash your hands right after giving first aid and before eating or drinking. When you are a teacher, you come into contact with many students and you want to protect the victim, the other students and yourself. Teachers are one of the most important people to have first aid because you are interacting with so many people and children are relying on you to take care of them when they are away from their family at school.
I learned about consent to giving first aid. I did not know there were two types, actual consent and Good Samaritan laws. Actual consent is oral or written permission from a mentally competent adult. The Good Samaritan laws are laws that protect people who give first aid in good faith and without negligence or misconduct.
One topic I learned about is checking a victim. The first thing to do is observe the scene. It should be safe for the rescuing person to help the victim. Then you should make sure the victim has an open airway, is breathing, and has a heartbeat, check if they are severely breathing. Does the victim have other injuries? I did not know that a person should check all these things before giving first aid. This will help me as a teacher because I need to know what actions to take when helping the victim and be able to tell a nurse, medic, etc. what is happening until they get there.
The second topic I learned about was choking. I have heard of several actions to take when a person is choking and I never knew what was correct. The universal distress signal is a warning signal that a person does by holding one or two hands clutching their throat. If you are choking you could try and call an emergency number and try and get the attention of others around you. Give yourself abdominal thrusts. If the person is not conscious, roll the person on their back and place the heel of your hand just above the navel. Point your finger towards the victim’s head and give 5 quick abdominal thrusts. If a baby is choking place the baby on your forearm or upper leg. Support their heads and use the heel of your hand and give 5 quick blows to the victims back between the shoulder blades. This will help me as a teacher, because small children like to put things in their mouth that they shouldn’t. It is important to be able to help them quickly.
The third topic I learned about was snake bites. I learned that you should keep the victim still; this reduces the speed of the poison traveling through the body. Keep the bitten area lower than the heart. Get them professional medical care as soon as possible. Living in South Carolina, poisonous snakes are out in the summer and children do not always know they are poisonous and can hurt them.
I would want to keep a first aid kit in my classroom because anything is liable to happen in class or outside the classroom. I rather be safe and sorry and know what I am doing before help is called. If I didn’t have a first aid kit in the classroom then the students and I are at risk of danger. If something actually happens, and if the emergency dispatcher does not contact help immediately then the injured person is in trouble. I as the teacher take full responsibility in the classroom. I have to keep my students away from danger or know what I am doing in a dangerous event. It is important to have this first aid for back up in a classroom. I learned some new vocabulary regarding to this guide. I learned that there are two types of consent. I did not know it wasn’t ok to help someone without having permission from a parent or guardian. I also learned the correct steps or the do’s and don’ts instruction when dealing with the victim. There are certain things you do not do when in an emergency situation because it could be a life/death situation and I am a teacher not a doctor. I will do my best to take the correct measures on the victim without harming but helping. If I am not sure I will always use the emergency number 911 ! To be a good quality teacher one topic I learned was how to use the RICE treatment. Kids are young and when playing things can get out of hand. If one student was to sprain a body part I will use this technique. R stands for rest which I will allow my student to stay calm and not move. The I stands for ice which I will apply on the injury right after it occurs to help reduce swelling and pain. Next the C stands for compression which I will wrap the injury with a elastic bandage to limit swelling and not to make it tight. The E stands for elevation. I can elevate or raise the injured body part to reduce swelling and to drain blood and fluid from area. If one the children faints due to the weather condition I know to lay my student on their back, elevate legs, loosen clothing and call 911. I am not to throw water or slap them. I have to know what to do in each situation whether I am a professional or not. I also learned about the many types of wounds and how to treat if it is infected. These three things will assist me because I know what to do and I would not be wasting any time dealing with the situation. Like I mentioned earlier I am the teacher and if I do not take heed to the problem who will. I take full responsibility for the safety for my kids and a healthy environment should be produced. Also if I already know about the first aid I could help prevent things from happening by discussing with my children and setting rules for the playground and classroom. SAFETY COMES FIRST !
The importance of first aid kits in a classroom is to care for children when an accident occurs. Simple to complex items can be found in a first aid kit such as band aids, latex gloves, antibacterial ointment, etc. Some schools may only have one nurse or none at all, so teachers should be prepared to treat simple injuries their students may have. When every child gets a paper cut or falls and bruises their leg, the school nurse would get totally overwhelmed. A first aid kit is also handy if a more serious injury were to occur. Most first aid kits come with instructions on how to deal with emergencies, so the teacher would know what to do until help arrived. It is important to keep the students safe, so having a Ziploc bag of band aids and other small items are good to take outside to recess. Because I am planning to teach early childhood students, I know there will be many days when a child gets hurt. They may need to go to a nurse, but being helping to help out and treat smaller injuries will be easier on the nurse and me as well.
Because I am first aid and CPR certified, and I am fully aware of all the components of giving first aid to someone. I became re-certified in May 2011, which is good because it refreshes my memory of how to care for the many illnesses and injuries that someone may get. One thing I learned from the reading was the different types of wounds, and their descriptions. I learned there are five different types. They are incisions, lacerations, abrasions, and avulsions. An incision is a cut is a cut caused by a sharp object. Incisions are usually deep, and can possibly damage blood cells, nerves, and tissues. Abrasions are caused by scraping the skin. If an abrasion is not cleaned, it can cause an infection in the skin. If a student gets an abrasion from a fall, it is important to get all of the dirt out of the injured area. Laceration is another wound. A laceration is an irregular tear of the skin. Like an incision, lacerations can also cause heavy bleeding. An avulsion is a pretty serious wound, where the skin is town away from the body. Finally, a puncture is when a pointed object pierces into the skin. If a nail or other sharp object does puncture the skin, a tetanus shot is probably needed.
Part 2:
I feel one of the most important topics in this handout that will assist me in being a quality is choking. Because I will be working with the younger grades, they are more likely to choke on an item or food. It will be important for me to know what to do, since air keeps you alive. The lack of air from a blockage in the airway can be very important. It takes very little time for someone to choke, so knowing the appropriate actions are also important. While a nurse or other emergency help was on the way, the teacher would need to know some precaution or instructions to take. Another topic in this article I think is important is Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, also known as CPR. This technique can be used to bring a heart beat back and restore breathing. In a classroom first aid kit should be instructions on how to give CPR to children and adults. If a child stops breathing, a teacher should be familiar with the technique enough to know what to do until medical personnel get there. My opinion is that all teacher and school staff should be CPR certified. Because it only takes a few minutes of not breathing to become very serious, faculty should know what to do if a situation occurs. Though I have never had to perform CPR, I am familiar with it and would be prepared to give it if necessary. The third topic I think that’s important for teachers in the handout is poisoning. Though it is not common for a child to be poisoned at school, there are chemicals that janitors use or classroom cleaners that may contain bleach. It can also be very serious if someone is unsure of what to do in a poisoning case. Some poisons can enter the body through inhalation or through the skin. If a student is poisoned, a teacher should call the poison control, and then take appropriate action. This may include moving the child away from others, and then follow the poison control’s instruction. I feel a teacher should be able to prevent a child from being poisoned by locking up any classroom cleaners, or not having them in a classroom at all. I’m sure a janitor could place them somewhere. In my opinion, all of these topics are important. Teachers should be taught what to do in case of an emergency. They are not just at school to teach student, but also to keep them safe!
I believe that Murphy of Murphy’s Law (anything that can go wrong, will go wrong) was a teacher. It is important to have a first aid kit available because kids will be kids and part of being a kid often involves problems that can be fixed with a first aid kit. With a kit in your classroom, the teacher can respond to the issue quickly, and not have to send a student to find the nurse and get the supplies that may be needed.
Most of the information on the handout was a review for me since many of my friends and family are medically trained. My Mom is a nurse that, in the past, has taught CPR and First Aid, and because of this I have taken the classes and have been trained in CPR and First Aid since I was in elementary school. My best friend is an EMT and I have learned a lot about what to do and when to do through listening to his stories and helping him practice for different exams. Also, I work in a nursing home, and much of this information is and has been covered through training and in services.
Shock is a topic that I think isn’t always considered a part of First Aid and that needs to be. This topic will help make me a quality teacher because I will be better able to de-escalate a possibly fatal situation that could potentially happen. Heat related illnesses, heat cramps, and heat exhaustion are all things that my students and I will face because of South Carolina’s weather. If I see the signs of heat related illnesses coming on, I can take steps to prevent it before the illness can get bad.
This first aid handout was very informational. I know that I want and need to have a first aid kit in my classroom at all times. First and most importantly I will need a first aid kit because children fall and run into things and injure themselves. Band-aids and sterile wipes are very important when children get scrapes and cuts. Teachers need these things to help their students clean their wounds to keep them from getting infections. First aid kits really protect children from these types of things. Also a first aid kit can assist a teacher in caring for a student until professional medical help can arrive. Sometimes schools cannot afford to have a nurse on call during all of the school hours so the classroom teacher has to act as the nurse when in reality she is not qualified. A first aid kit can help a teacher give a student minor medical attention if she is allowed to do so. I would like to have things like bandages, gauzes, alcohol wipes, antiseptic spray, etc. for my first aid kit. I would also like to have something to treat insect stings. I know when I was in first grade I was stung by a bee on the play ground and the teacher on recess duty told me there she did not have anything to help me and that I just had to deal with it, it would stop hurting in a few minutes. She never asked if I wanted to go to the nurse or if I was allergic to bee stings.
For my own help, I would like to put this handout in my classroom and make sure that I know all the precautions to take with every type of injury. I would keep it in a convenient location where I could reach it and use it at a resource in case of an emergency in the classroom. A lot of these injuries talked about in the handout can easily happen to children and adults as well. Having knowledge of what to do in these situations will keep my kids and me safe each day.
The first thing that I learned from this hand out that I did not know about before was how to treat seizures. One day I may have a child in my class who has a seizure and I need to be prepared for that. The only thing I knew about a person having a seizure is that you have to make sure they do not bite their tongue. I never knew that I should loosen the clothing around the victim’s neck or that I should not hold the victim down. My first reaction to someone having a seizure probably would have been to try to stop their movement and hold them still. Now I know that this is not the proper step to take. I also never knew that I had to have consent to give someone medical attention. There is actual consent and implied consent. If a conscious person tells me not to help them, I am legally not allowed to help them in any way. If an adult tells me not to help their child, I may not touch their child or give them medical attention. For their own personal reasons some people may not want medical help from me or medical professionals and they have the right to deny assistance. I know now that if I see someone who needs medical attention, I first have to ask permission to help that person. If I do not take these precautions of asking permission I could get myself into trouble and be sued by that person which I would not want to happen. I am also glad that I know now the three types of people I can give help to without permission. If the victim I come into contact with is not one of these three people I cannot help them without consent. The Good Samaritan laws that protect people who in good faith help victims are great in my opinion. Some people genuinely want to help other and should not be punished for attempting to save a person’s life. I also never knew how to treat someone who had had their tooth knocked out. Putting a tooth in milk or water was a completing new idea to me. It is very easy for someone to get their tooth knocked out especially if they play sports. Knowing how to save the tooth until they can get to a dentist can increase the chances that the tooth will be able to be put back in.
The first thing I read about that I know will assist me in being a quality teacher is to know how to make emergency calls. Like I mentioned earlier, school do not always have nurses available during all the school hours so I need to know how to make the proper phone calls to get my students help when they need it and I need to do so as quickly and calmly as possible. Also I know the section about choking will help me in being a quality teacher. Most classroom teachers take their students to lunch. If one of my students begins choking I need to know how to help them and unblock their airway. If I am not able to stop them from choking I can begin to use what I learned about CPR until proper medical professionals can help the student regain their breathing. I also think the section about stopping bleeding will be helpful since students can get cuts and scrapes a lot. Knowing this information will help me keep my students much safer in my classroom.
I believe that it will be very important to keep a first aid kit in my future classroom. Since I want to work with young children, I will need to be prepared for any injuries or illnesses that my children may be exposed to. A first aid kit will guarantee that I have the proper necessities such as bandages, ointments, and thermometers, but to also ensure my students’ safety and that I have what is needed in order to follow all universal precautions. Young children may often run into things or fall down and I will need to be able to quickly and efficiently care for each of my students. A first aid kit will certainly help me in doing this.
I learned a few surprising things while reading this article that I did not already know. For starters, I had no idea there was such a thing as a “Good Samaritan law.” This law is meant protect people who try to help injured people with the use of first aid and universal precautions. I think this law is a great way to help people who want to help others. Another piece of information I did not know was how to stop a nosebleed. I always assumed that to stop a nosebleed one should tilt the head back. However, I was very wrong. To stop a nosebleed on should tilt the head slightly forward while pinching the nostrils together. Tilting the head slightly forward ensure that the blood slows towards the nose’s external opening instead of down the person’s throat. This will be great to know in the future. I work at a day care now and often children approach me with nose bleeds. Lastly, some useful information I learned from this article was about bee stings. To remove a bee stinger you should try to flick the stinger away. This could be done by using a nail file, some type of card (credit card), or a finger nail. If one tries to remove the stinger with tweezers the venom from the bee will be sent into the victim’s body. That is excellent information to know because I would hate to make the sting worse by sending the venom through the body.
This article gave me many ways to excel in caregiving in my future classroom. One topic that I learned about that I believe will help me a lot in the future was the Universal Precautions. These precautions include steps that should be taken in order to prevent the spreading of diseases amongst human blood and many body fluids. All body fluids should be treated as if they carry HIV, HBV, or other pathogens. I think that this is an excellent idea. All body fluids should be treated this way because you never know what child may be carrying a disease. The children should not have to walk around with a label on them for you to be extra careful in dealing with their injuries. A teacher should do this anyways because they want the best for each of their students. Using nonporous disposable gloves will prevent the spread of any diseases the injured person may carry in their bodily fluids. It is very important to dispose of the gloves after each use because not only does it ensure the caregivers safety but it also ensures the safety of the other children in the classroom. To use the same gloves twice in a row could spread disease from one child to another and result in fatal consequences. Washing your hands with waterless antiseptic after each removal of the gloves for extra protection is something else I think this is very important because even with the use of gloves there is still a chance that some type of fluid could reach the caregivers skin. Especially when the caregiver takes off the gloves, he or she may accidently touch an infected part of the used glove. When providing care for breathing emergencies one should use a face mask with a one-way valve. This is a great idea because it ensures that the caregiver will not come in contact with cuts or blood in the victim’s mouth or nose. All precautions should be taken to ensure there is no contact with victim’s blood. I think this is very important because there is no way one can be too careful. The spreading of disease is serious and can be prevented if the right steps are taken. You should never eat or drink anything while giving first aid and you should never tough your eyes, mouth, or nose while providing care. I believe that taking these precautions will greatly benefit the caregiver and the victim in my future classroom.
Another important thing I learned is what to do if an infant or young child is choking. This is very important for me to know since I will be working with children in the early childhood area. If one of my students is choking I would need to know how to lie them face down on my forearm or upper leg, supporting the lower jaw and chest. I would need to know to give the 5 quick blows between the shoulder blades. I would then need to know how to do the chest thrusts. These steps are very important for me to know since some children may have a tendency to swallow their food too quickly. I want to be able to do everything possible to save the student.
Lastly, I believe that the RICE treatment for sprains and strains will help me in my future classroom. Young children, especially boys, may often play too rough outside. Although hopefully I will see this and end it before there is any serious injury, the RICE treatment is something necessary for me to know in case an injury does present itself. Using RICE will help me to remember to rest, ice, compress, and elevate the injury. I believe this article will help me in my future classroom.
There are numerous reasons why it would be a good idea to keep a first aid kit in my classroom. First aid kits contain an abundant amount of supplies in it that can help with this. The gloves can help keep from the pathogens in the victim’s blood or other bodily fluids from entering my bloodstream. The waterless antiseptic is a quick and easy way that I could wash my hands with after removing my gloves to provide that extra protection. Also, the face mask that is provided has a one way valve. This can be used when having to perform CPR to keep the victims blood from entering my mouth and protecting myself from disease. Wrapping any cuts, scrapes, or rashes that I may have with plastic wrap or sterile dressing can be another way I can protect myself.
All of the items in the first aid kit have a reason, one that can help in saving lives. Without having a first aid kit, teachers would be helpless and the victim would suffer much more. So I believe that teachers also need to be aware of what they need to do with the first aid kit more importantly. Just because they have the kit in the classroom does not mean that they know how to use it. When one knows how to use the items in the kit, they will feel more confident in helping the victim and will help in making the environment a much safer place for everyone. So when a student gets hurt, they need to make sure that they are capable of keeping calm and helping the student as much as they can with what they have until the proper care arrives.
By reading this hand out on first aid, injury prevention, and safety I was able to learn a few things that I did not know. I was aware of the RICE treatment, but was not positive on the meanings behind each letter: rest, ice, compression, and elevation. I also did not know what to do if someone had a seizure. I have heard some people say to put a wallet in their mouth to keep them from biting their tongue; whereas this says do not do this. I have not heard of a medical alert tag either. Both of these situations are common occurrences and it is so important that I am prepared and willing to use the information given to me in an emergency. The RICE treatment is a catchy slogan that can be remembered easily and both my students and I can benefit from my knowledge of it. There are numerous situations in which it can be called for. It makes sense to not place a wallet in a victim’s mouth because I could possibly block their airway without knowing it.
One topic that I feel will assist me in my classroom is the topic of choking. I was aware of what to do when one is choking, but I did not know that there was a universal distress signal. I feel that it is important that all of my students are aware of this so that they will have a way to signal to me when they are not capable of talking. At their young age, choking is common and this signal will allow me to help them much faster. The second topic that I feel will help me are the ABC’s of CPR. This is a great way to help me remember the steps of giving CPR. If one of my students is in need of CPR, it will be hard to keep calm and remember all that I need to. ABC is easy to remember and it will be extremely helpful to be able to just remember those three steps in an emergency. The third topic that I feel will help me are the steps for sudden illness’. A sudden illness can be difficult to determine and for children it is sometimes hard for them to say exactly what it wrong with them. It is important that I am aware of the symptoms and am able to take proper care of them. It is not only my job to teach my students the material to grow and learn, but it is also my job to take care of them physically. While they are in my classroom, they are my responsibility and I want to be able to give them the care that they need no matter the situation. This is even more of a reason why I need to know all of the first aid procedures necessary to do so.
First-aid kits are a very important thing to have in the classroom whether it is in a preschool room or a highschool classroom. When teaching children you never know what is going to happen to them. It is always good to be prepared and know the rules. You made to make sure where ever the first-aid kit in the classroom is located that there is also an emergency phone call list and consent forms. If the parents of the child say to not care for them then you are not allowed. Usually in schools if there is a nurse’s office then that is where the emergency contact list and consent forms will be but in some schools as the classroom teacher you might also be the nurse. Another thing when it comes to first-aid is the kit needs to be checked and up to date. You want to make sure nothing in it has expired or that you are out of something. I feel like a lot of children in the classroom use a lot of band-aids. Little kids love band-aids because for some reason no matter what happens they feel like it makes everything all better. With younger children that I feel like they will need band-aids for anything from a paper cut to a skinned knee.
I learned a lot of new things from the first-aid handout. One thing that I have learned is a quite a simple rule of first-aid and that is using universal precautions. In all honesty after reading about these it made more sense to me. I would just think if I had a child in my classroom who was bleeding the first thing I would do rush to their aid and help them. What I didn’t think about was wearing gloves when I needed to help this student. I learned that I need to wear gloves to protect myself and my student from getting any disease that may be transferred through blood. Something else I learned was about consent. I never knew that my students needed some type of consent because I always thought as a teacher my job was to care for my students and if they were hurt I would take care of them. Some of the other items in the hand out I feel like I already knew about from being an athlete. I have suffered from a lot of these injuries and know how to treat them. I think that RICE is a very important thing for people to learn because it can be very helpful. The other reason why I felt like I knew about some of the things in the hand out is because last semester I took a CPR certification class and now I am CPR certified. I feel like this will help me out and make parents feel more at ease knowing I can handle those issues.
Three topics that I have learned about that will help me out as a teacher are bee stings, nose bleeds, and sprains. I picked these topics because as a teacher I feel like I will encounter these things with young children. When children are outside at recess there is always a chance that they could get stung by a bee and now I know how to take care of it. I learned that instead of using tweezers I would need to use something smaller like a credit card to get the stinger out because tweezers will push it farther into the skin. I also picked nose bleeds because I can just imagine a child getting hit in the face with a ball and get a nose bleed. I learned that the child should tilt his head forward and pinch his nostrils together. I picked sprains because children can have a tendency to fall off of playground equipment and get hurt. When it comes to sprains it is all about applying the RICE technique.
First Aid
1.) Tell me why you would want to keep a first aid kit in your classroom? (explain and reflect)
Teachers need to keep a first aid kit in their classroom, so they can respond as quickly as possible to an emergency that may occur. They need to keep things like: band aids, gauze, paper tape etc. The teacher could simply buy an already made first aid kit from a local drug store.
I think it is very important to keep a first aid kit in your class. You never know when something will happen with little ones. For example they could be playing on the playground, fall and scrap their knee. You as the teacher look at it see it’s not that bad, you could save a trip to the nurse. If you had a first aid kit in your class you could wash the wound and put a band aid on it.
2.) Did you learn anything new from reading the first aid handout? (explain and reflect)
Yes. I learned that you have to ask for consent before performing CPR or first aid to a person. I just assumed that everyone would want the help, but I guess there are some they may not want it due to religious beliefs or other personal reasons. I learned that there are two different types of consent. 1. Is the actual consent which is when you ask someone “can I perform CPR/ first aid on you” and they say yes. The other is implied consent, which is where someone is unconscious, or a parent of an infant or toddler gives you permission.
3.) Explain and reflect about three topics that you learned about in the handout that you feel will assist you in being a quality teacher.
- I liked the things that I might see on my future students, which could have not necessarily happened at school, but this handout gave me ways of recognizing signs of some things I may see on my future students.
- Tick Bites- A bite by a tick can spread the disease called Lyme disease. I learned that a rash will form around the actual bite, eventually covering a circle area of about 7 inches in diameter. The rash has different colors. The center will look light red; whereas the outside of the rash will be darker, and possibly raised. A student could complain of a headache, fever, or weakness. So I now know if I see this rash I need to immediately take this student to the nurse to have it checked out.
- Spider Bite- A bite from a black widow spider can be deadly! This spider bite will produce a dull, numbing pain students could also possibly complain of headache, muscular weakness, vomiting, and sweating. A bite from a brown recluse spider can also be dangerous. This type of spider bite would have an open ulcer, students could also possibly complain of chills, nausea, and vomiting.
- Nosebleed- Nose bleeds often occur in school aged children. Could be caused from a blow to the nose, stress, sinuses etc. If a nose bleed should occur you as the

teacher would teacher would need to ask the student to sit with their head slightly forward, NOT back or up like most people think! Have them pinch their nostrils firmly together for about 5 minutes. The victim should breathe through their mouth and spit out any blood. Apply an ice pack to bridge of nose.
I know that with most of these things, and in a public school we would have to take the child to the nurse, and let her handle it but, at least if we has a first aid it in our classroom we may be able to complete the first few steps, and start the healing process earlier.

I believe it is important to keep a first aid kit in the classroom because as a teacher you need to be prepared for accidents that may happen in your classroom. There may or may not be a school nurse, however, would you want to send a child with a small paper cut to the school nurse? Most likely not, you could clean the cut, apply ointment and a bandage. By having a first aid kit in your classroom you would have all those items in one location and accessible to you, instead of having one item in one place and another in a completely different place.
If there is no school nurse then you are the first line of care the child will have in most situations at school. So it would be very helpful to have items that will help you take care of the day to day bumps and bruises as well as being able to apply a bandage if needed to a more major cut while you wait on medical assistance. You would also have the needed protection for yourself in the kit to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. It’s not always easy to find gloves to protect yourself from blood hazards, however if they are in the kit then you’ve got them right where you need them so that you can immediately assist the child.
I’m not sure that I really learned anything new from the handout as I’ve had numerous first aid and infectious disease classes. However, it is never too often to refresh your memory so that you can retain the information and recall things you may not think about often that will come in handy. Previously I was required to attend a yearly course on first aid and hazardous situations, so it has been a few years and I do not really think about most of the situations that often.
I think that learning about choking would be beneficial to any teacher. We are in the classroom with the children during snack and we are in the lunchroom with them during meals. It is always a good idea to refresh your memory on techniques to use when you are around children eating sometimes 3 times a day for five days a week.
I also believe that it is beneficial for teachers to understand about different cuts, and what they can do to stop the bleeding as well as bloody noses, which may happen by accident or during a fight with children. It is a good thing to know that the child should not hold their head back and therefore swallow the blood instead of leaning a bit forward and pinching the blood flow. Another good thing to do for bloody noses to stop the blood is to put a piece of gauze or tissue into the nose so that it can stop the bleeding without having to hold the nose if it’s a smaller child.
I always find it helpful to keep information about plant reactions. I am often amazed by the fact that people don’t realize that the clothing that came into contact with the plant is also contaminated. I’ve also learned in the past that you don’t necessarily have to touch the plant if someone is burning it in the area then you can react through airborne pathogens. So you need to be prepared with topical solutions to put on the affected areas, as scratching will spread the oil of the plant onto other areas of the skin. It also helps as a teacher to have small children wash their hands and lower arms thoroughly when they come inside from nature walks as you may not know what they have touched.
1. Tell me why you would want to keep a first aid kit in your classroom? (explain and reflect)
First aid kits are very important to have in the classroom. First aid kits are used for many different things when a child gets hurt. There are also many different items that are in the kit such as band aids, gloves, and masks. There are many reasons why I would want a first aid kit in my classroom. No matter how much you try to prevent accidents they will always happen. Kits are intended to be in every type of classroom, meaning there is no specific class or age group that would need it more than others.
If I am teaching preschool and we are outside on the playground and one child falls, it is more than likely I am going to need a first aid kit to take care of the child’s injury. Not only outside of the classroom, but also inside of the classroom a first aid kit is needed. For example, a child may have a bloody nose and it is very unsafe for a teacher to not wear gloves. Therefore using the gloves that are in the first aid kit is useful and it also protects the teacher as well as the student. I would also want a first aid kit in my classroom, because children are always playing rough and sometimes get cut. The first aid kit comes in handy, because the gloves are available for protection as well as band aids to possibly stop the bleeding as well as keep them from getting particles into the wound.
2. Did you learn anything new from reading the first aid handout? (explain and reflect).
There were several points that I learned from the article. I would not know what to do if a child went into shock or was poisoned. The article informed me on the steps that I would need to take in order to get the child into a safer state. I feel as if this article did a good job of explaining what the condition is and how one might go about handling the situation. I am not sure how I would act as if I were put into this type of situation.
3. Explain and reflect about three topics that you learned about in the handout that you feel will assist you in being a quality teacher.
While reading this article, I have learned a lot about first aid kits. For example, one topic I learned about what the universal precautions. The universal precautions are “the steps taken to prevent the spread of disease by treating all human blood and certain body fluids as if they contain HIV, HBV, and other pathogens” (Injury Prevention Safety, pg439). This is very important for the teacher to know simply because the teacher may or may not know if a child is infected with a pathogen and needs to be protected at all times.
Another topic that I learned about was what to do in certain situations. For example, a child will more than likely not be bitten by a tick in the classroom, but it is very important for a teacher to know what to look for and the symptoms of what a tick bite can cause. Not only is it important for the teacher to know what it looks like, but also how to remove it in case a nurse is not available. I think that the information from the article was very helpful in giving steps on how to handle the situation.
The third topic that I learned about from the article is what to do if a child sprains a part of the body. The steps that are to be taken involve giving the rice treatment on the sprain. The rice treatment is spelled out to be rest, ice, compression, and elevation. The child is to receive medical attention if a fracture is suspected.
I feel that this article has helped me educate myself on what to do in certain situations that I may experience with the students in my classroom. However, I hope to never experience some of the situations that could happen that the article mentioned. I do feel as if I learned something from the article, because I was informed of the first aid kit as well as the conditions a child may have or experience in the classroom or while at school.

I would want to keep a first aid kit in my classroom and possibly with me at all times throughout my day with my students. Accidents can happen at any time and most are unforeseen. I know as a mother of a five year old that an accident or a child getting hurt can happen in a split second before you can react to stop it. As I am writing this, my daughter has just trip and fallen in our hallway. I think the most important thing you can have in your first aid kit is latex gloves. There are so many diseases around these days and anyone is susceptible to catching them. It is important to try to treat an injury but your safety is important as well and should come first.
I was surprised that Hypothermia can occur in air and water temperatures of 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Thinking about it now, I see that overtime that would be pretty cold but at first I would have thought it would be at the freezing point on the Fahrenheit thermometer.
The three topics that I read about that I feel are essential in helping you be a quality teacher are knowing the universal precautions, checking a victim, and responding to choking. Working with young children accidents can happen at any moment. It is important to be knowledgeable in safety and rescue procedures. Knowing the universal precautions is extremely important for your own protection as well as the victims. It is important to always wear latex gloves when working with a victim. Washing your hands after removing gloves and keeping soiled hands away from your eyes, nose, and mouth are critical in the prevention of spreading diseases. Checking the victim involves surveying the scene before attempting to help the victim to make sure it is safe for you to help. Once the area is safe it is important to assess the victim. These are questions you should ask yourself when assessing the victim. Can the victim breathe? Does the victim have a heartbeat? Is the victim bleeding? Does the victim have multiple injuries? Once the assessment is completed it is extremely important to contact an emergency number for professional help if needed. At this point check the victim for blockage of their airway and then if it is not blocked administer CPR if the victim needs it. Always use a mask for your protection when doing this. Choking can occur at any age but young children are more likely to choke because they like to put things into their mouths. There are different techniques in dislodging objects in the airway depending on if the individual is conscious or unconscious and also depending on their age. It is important be knowledgeable of the different techniques that can be used and it is also a good idea to be trained by professionals in CPR.
Having a first aid kit handy at all times is very important for many reasons. One reason is to protect yourself as well as the injured person. Many diseases can be passed through body fluids. These diseases can be prevented through protection of items found in a first aid kit. Some of these items will include gloves, plastic bags to place the contaminated material, and a face mask or shield for rescue breathing. Also, there will be items such as band-aids, a cleanser, gauze, scissors, and tape for any type of open wound where bleeding occurs. Instant cold pack and ace bandages will be in the first aid kit to use as a temporary relief until you can seek further treatment from professionals. There will also be material in the first aid kit for stings, bites, some poison treatment, and burns. Also, you may be able to prevent someone from further injuries such as a break, major bleeding, and head injury due to lack of blood and oxygen flow. Having a first aid kit present at all times is important so you can protect yourself and others, treat injuries, and prevent further injuries.
I learned many new things from reading this handout. I learned how to respond to a knocked out tooth. I never knew you could save a tooth to place back in the mouth in which it was knocked out. I also learned the steps for first aid of shock and poisoning. There were many diseases mentioned that I had heard, but I didn’t really know much about them and learned more about them. Some of these diseases are Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. I knew there were many different types of burns but didn’t really know the differences in them before reading the handout. I hope to never have to use this knowledge inside or outside my classroom but I know there is always a chance that I will have to use it. This is valuable knowledge and I plan to keep the handout with me in a first aid kit as a reference.
I feel that being refreshed on the methods of treatment for chocking, rescue breathing, and CPR were of great value. I have had classes on these, but they are always changing. I feel that being refreshed on these courses annually is valuable, and I am glad I was refreshed on them. There are many times when a child may choke or lose his or her breath. Knowing the steps to follow for these treatments is extremely important so you can treat the chocking victim. Also, learning about seizures is important for a classroom setting. It is not mandatory for a parent or guardian to report seizure occurrences to a teacher, so a student may be sitting in the classroom learning and just have a seizure. It is very important for a teacher to know what to do in the occurrence of a seizure. The steps to take in the occurrence of a seizure are important to know to prevent injury from happening. The most important piece of knowledge a teacher can have when it comes to first aid is consent. A teacher must have consent in order to give first aid to a victim. This consent is important to prevent possible suing. It is best to have written consent but can have oral consent. If you do not have consent because you cannot contact the guardian, there are laws to protect the person giving the first aid. It is important as a teacher to research the laws used to protect them as a good Samaritan.
Accidents happen every day, especially with young children. As a future teacher, it would be important for me to keep a first aid kit in my classroom in case an accident happens and one of my students becomes injured because of this. Unfortunately, school nurses are scarce today and are not at the school at all times. Having a first aid kit in my classroom and having up to date first aid knowledge will be beneficial when something happens to a student or faculty member and there is no nurse on duty at the time.
This first aid guide has been very helpful in teaching me about things I never knew. One of the most important things I learned about was getting consent to give first aid to another person. In a time of crisis I would have never thought about getting someone’s permission before assisting them in any way I could possible. I also learned about many different types of wounds such as an abrasion and an avulsions, the difference in them and how to handle each situation if one were to occur. I also learned about common accidents that may happen in the classroom such as a nosebleed or a knocked-out tooth and how to control the bleeding. I never knew that when a tooth gets knocked out to put the tooth in milk.
Being raised in the south and spending much of my childhood outside I have learned that we don’t have very long winters and have a longer period of time when children are at risk of coming in contact with animals that may cause them harm such as bees, snakes and insects. This guide has helped me to be able to identify the symptoms and signs of may types of animal bites and how to treat them.
As a teacher and a childcare provider I found this Guide to First Aid Procedures to be extremely helpful in dealing with and understanding everyday accidents. I recommend this guide to anyone, especially those involved in childcare.
First aid kits are vital in all situations. Children are always getting into something and for every little injury they need a band aid. I always have a first aid kit I have a mini one in my purse, one in my apartment and one in my car. In recent months keeping these first aid kits well stocked as become even more important to me because of the fact that I contracted a MRSA infection. For this reason I always need to be extremely careful when I have any type of cut or blister so that it does not develop into another MRSA abscess.
This handout was more of a review from past firs aid information that I had learned. One new term that I learned was Avulsion. This is a very interesting term and I never knew the proper term for have a body part severed. The other first aid part that I learned was about marine animal stings. I never knew how to handle stings like this and I think it is extremely valuable because I babysit for a lot of families over the summer that go to the beach and this would help me if any of the kids I was watching received a marine animal sting.
I felt as though the section on Consent to give first aid is extremely important to know about as a future educator. This section really allows for a teacher to protect herself when administering first aid to a student. It’s sad to say but this day in age people will sue for everything and educators need to be prepared to be able to protect themselves as well as their students. Universal precautions are also an important section as a future educator. This section is especially important for me because MRSA is a lifelong infection and I do not want to spread it to any of my students. It is also important that I do not pick up anything from my students. As an educator I can only know so much about my students ‘health and most is what is volunteered by parents, so I may not know what types of infections the students have. Also using proper injury protocol will set a good example for my students so that they will not just run up to someone that is bleeding and possibly become infected with a germ. The checking a victim section is also extremely important because as an educator I will need to be able to accurately assess an emergency situation in my classroom because I will be the first responder and will need to determine if other school personnel or emergency personnel and I need to be able to accurately assess these situations. I do not ever want to make the wrong decision that could cost a child life long consequences or death. This was an extremely helpful article and will be a useful tool for reference when facing emergency situations.
1. I want the kids in my classroom to be in a safe environment. By having a first-aid kit is way to make sure that I have any emergency supplies. Since I want to teach 2nd grade I know that 2nd graders may encounter accidents. By having a first-aid kit in my classroom keeps me ready for some emergency that my occur.
2. After reading through the hand out I learned new ways to deal with everyday things like: bleeding, bruises and other body harming things. These will go into play while I am teaching because these things can happen any time.
3. The three things I learn were the victim assessment when checking on a victim. Since I want to be a teacher I have to make sure that I now how to check on one of my students if something happens. I also learned about what to do when someone goes in to shock and what to do when dealing with heat cramps. I know that by being a teacher I will encounter these situations.
It is important to keep first aid kits where they might be needed. You will want to have a first aid kit in your classroom. I provided a first aid handout for you to read. Tell me why you would want to keep a first aid kit in your classroom? (explain and reflect)
Working with younger children, accidents are prone to happen. The children sometimes do not watch out for their own safety which in turn makes it even more important for the teacher to be alert at all times. There are several reasons why a first aid kit is essential in the classroom, cuts or scrapes from recess, splinters from being outside, cuts from using the scissors incorrectly, etc. A first aid kit can help a teacher prevent infection of wounds other areas that may be hurt on the children. It will help the teacher to be able to respond quickly and efficiently to many of the situations that may happen in and out of the classroom.
Did you learn anything new from reading the first aid handout? (explain and reflect)
Yes, I learned something new by reading he handout. When dealing with someone who is experiencing a seizure, I had no idea how to exactly care for them. But by having these directions and tips and I feel more equip to handle the situation if it arises. As well as when dealing with a nose bleed. Growing up it was always just hold your head back until it stops. I did not know it would be best to add an ice pack to the emergency.
Explain and reflect about three topics that you learned about in the handout that you feel will assist you in being a quality teacher.
One most important topic was actual consent versus implied consent. Being a Good Samaritan I would think that you always are suppose to help someone in need but to think that I may get sued over helping someone child live is ridiculous but I understand. It hurts me to even think of experiencing a situation of that caliber but I do know its not worth my job. Another thing that also helped was the information on Heartsaver CPR in schools. I think it is essential for everyone to know CPR procedures even though someone may not desire to be saved there are others who do, so by having these safety tools it can increase the chance of survival. On the playground children will experience many incidents whether they are life threatening or not and whether they come from humans, animals or insects. We as teachers must be prepared at all times. The information on bee stings proved very relevant to me because I have never encountered that situation but know that it can happen to anyone at any time. Dealing with a child in that situation can warrant stress but by knowing not to use tweezers to pull out the stinger and place something cold over the area will allow me to handle that situation if need be during any classroom situation.
